College admissions have always carried a certain weight, but today’s students are facing unprecedented levels of anxiety and perfectionism. National surveys consistently point to rising mental-health concerns among teens, and the admissions process—high stakes, high expectations, and high uncertainty—often amplifies these pressures.

The American Psychological Association reports that youth anxiety has climbed steadily over the past decade. Similarly, the 2023 Healthy Minds Study found that more than half of high-school students applying to college experienced significant stress tied to academic performance and future planning. Research published in the Journal of Personality also highlights a marked rise in socially prescribed perfectionism—the sense that others expect flawless achievement. This mindset is strongly connected to burnout, avoidance, and reduced academic motivation.

While some stress may be unavoidable, the admissions journey doesn’t have to be defined by anxiety or perfectionism. When students feel supported, grounded, and encouraged to see their worth beyond test scores and acceptance letters, they not only move through the process with greater confidence—they also enter college with the resilience and self-awareness necessary to thrive.

Yet many students approach college admissions with a fundamental misconception. They view universities much like they view God: as all-powerful gatekeepers demanding a checklist of good deeds for approval. This mindset fuels pressure rather than perspective.

In this blog series, we’ll explore nine practical strategies to help students navigate the college admissions process with less stress and more emotional wellbeing—and ultimately address the question: How can we guide students through this pressure-filled season without sacrificing their mental health?
